    Description

This is an old but in perfect working condition HeNe laser head, made by Hughes Aircraft Co. in USA, with a power supply custom refurbished/modified using a Melles Griot box from an older power supply (picture #1). The laser head is a metallic, cylindrical tube enclosure, 43 mm dia. x 270mm length (picture #2) and shows some minor signs of its age, with erased type and serial number (picture #3). The most probably type of the laser head (after measuring its characteristics) is 3222H-PC. The modified Melles Griot power supply box (pictures #4 - #7) contains a never used before (new) brick power supply, made by Laser Drive, Inc., USA, for Hughes LF Series laser heads, similar to that of picture #8.
Its type is 314LFBRH2, delivering cca. 1.75 kVDC high voltage specifically for this type of laser head, with a DC current of 6.5 mA. It uses at the input 115/230 VAC with 0.12/0.06 A. The other components of the original, older Melles Griot power supply remained in the box, including a 1 A fuse at the input circuitry of the brick. The power supply is set for an input mains voltage of 115 VAC, but can be used also with 230 VAC just by moving the switch on the back of the box. The combination laser head/modified power supply was professionally tested during long term operation and the results are summarized below. The laser delivers a measured output power of over 1.7 mW (pictures #9 - #12 for measurements). It represents a laser hazard class 3R (for HeNe lasers with powers between 1 mW - 5 mW). The warm up time is cca. 15 min. The beam is linearly polarized. This laser can be best used for educational optical experiments as interferometry, polarization measurements, fiber optics, beam characterization, or as a nice collectible item of laser history. Explanation of pictures: #1 - what you buy and get - three items: the laser head, the power supply, and the power cord; #2, #3 - images of the laser head; #4 - #7 - images of the modified power supply box; #8 - image of a never used power supply brick for Hughes LF Series laser heads; #9, #10 - measuring the output power with a professional equipment -nulling the detector; #11, #12 - full laser power displayed. Great tool for professionals or hobbyists.
