Description
This is a wonderful antique 19th century painted terra cotta tobacco box made by Wilhelm Schiller & Son of Bavaria. It has been painted to resemble bronze, with lines of gold beading as accents. The top of the lid has a figural greyhound and the ends of the box have figural faces with crowns that were to hold matches. There are strikes below the heads. There are pipes and smoking paraphernalia in relief on both sides. The piece bears the WS&S mark on the bottom for Wilhelm Schiller & Son. It measures 6 1/2" tall to the top of the greyhounds head, 7 3/4" across and 4 3/4" deep. There are some chips that have been filled in to match the color around the inside edge and a filled in chip on one end above the face. Nothing noticeable at all. Overall it displays very well, with quite an impressive look. You will be pleased.
