In the 18th century Tobacco Jars were used by storekeepers to store his patrons' favorite tobacco blends. Made by OUD Delft of Nijmegen, Holland and hand painted, this Tobacco Jar is reproduced from a tin-enameled earthenware piece made in the second half of the 18th century. Delftware was a common pottery of the colonial America and today it is treasured for its grace, coloring and style. OUD was officially licensed to produce delft ware for Colonial Williamsburg, their copies were almost exact replicas of original pieces and were made using the same techniques used in 18th century Holland. Each piece was lightly fired before it is dipped in tin-enamel glaze which is allowed to dry. The decorations are then hand painted by a skilled artist, afterwards a final glaze is applied for brilliant shine. Comes with original brass top sold by Colonial Williamsburg, the brass top is a modern addition for more practical storage
